Many parents ask, "How can I help my child
be more successful in math?"
Here are a few good articles I thought are worth reading. |

"How you can help your child with their
mathematics at home?"
Submitted on 2/06/01 (taken from the site

-
Find an appropriate place to do schoolwork.
Select a well-lit, comfortable, quiet spot in your home, and make that a
designated homework area.
-
Find a quiet area without distractions. A place
without a television, radio, or stereo is optimal. Make sure this spot is
away from others who are not doing homework.
-
Either find a place that is well-lit or create
an area with a lot of light. Poor lighting creates eye fatigue.
-
Make sure that area has the necessary supplies
close at hand. (books, pencils, pens, paper, graph paper, ruler, calculator,
protractor, and compass)
-
Establish routine study hours. Find a good time
to do homework, and have your child study within this time frame every day.
-
Encourage your child to do his best work and to
get it done on time. Do not do the homework for your child. If there is
something he doesn't understand, guide him or her through the directions in
order that her or she may reach the goal his or herself.
-
Praise your child's efforts - not only when he
or she brings home a good grade, but for small efforts as well.
-
If your child is not doing his homework, listen
to the reason why and then communicate firmly that you expect him or her to
be a responsible student and to get his or her homework to school when
assigned.
-
If your child has no homework, instruct him or
her to spend their homework time reviewing notes, reading the math text, and
or practicing missed problems from past assignments/tests.
-
Require your child to keep a binder or notebook
for math ONLY. Moreover, insist that this notebook be kept organized. It is
beneficial to maintain a notebook in which tests, homework, and notes are
separated and kept in order. Have them keep a list of homework assignments
in the front of the notebook so that the both of you can easily keep track
of what needs to be done. If you see wrinkled, random paper, oozing out of a
deadly black hole, you can rest assured that your child is not organized
with schoolwork. I has been my experience that students who are organized
tend to have more success.
Stress the
importance of your student's math learning. I have heard on several occasions
parents make assertions such as "I never use algebra.", or "I was horrible in
math.", to their children. I feel that these kind of statements can hinder a
child's willingness to struggle to understand difficult math concepts. I can
imagine them thinking "my parents didn't like math but they turned out OK". Try
to stress the importance of their learning instead of discouraging.
If you choose to incorporate any of these ideas into your home, be consistent
and frequent. You may have to check your child's binder for organization daily
for a couple weeks before they begin to self-regulate. Daily reminders are what
help a child build good work ethic characteristics which will benefit them in
the long run.

There is no magic trick I can
give you to cure the problem of how to help your kids with their homework...
But I do have some suggestions that will, hopefully, help. Each child and each
parent is different...
Here's the most important one:
1) If
the situation has escalated to tears (the child's or YOURS), take a break. Once
things are this hot, not much concentration or learning can occur. (Of course,
if the tears are fake and produced just to get out of doing the homework --
leave the room and make him tough it out!)
2) Keep in mind
that math can be one of the most frustrating things on the planet. This is
triply compounded if the child does not have a strong enough foundation in the
topics building up to the task at hand.
3) Referring
back to #2 on my list: When helping, try to identify if
the difficulty is with skills that the child should have already mastered.
If it is, then your energies are best spent in reviewing. The child will not
be able to move forward if the foundation is not there.
4) Let the
child know that you understand their frustration... BUT don't feed it!
Don't say things like, "Oh, I know. I
hate math too!" You can, however, say something like, "I had trouble in math
too. But I wish I would've stuck with it better than I did."
5) If the child
has procrastinated and is now trying to do his homework at the last minute - and
trying to make everyone in the house suffer with him... It's cruel, but let him
suffer alone. Even if it means that he will not get it done and his grade will
suffer. Rescuing the child who has procrastinated will only cause him to do it
again and ASSUME someone will bail him out. This is not a good view of the world
to develop.
Here's an easy example:
If the child cannot do long division because he can't do the
subtraction part...
Then a review is needed.
Here's a list of questions you can ask the child when they are
stuck:
1) Is
there an example in the book like
this?
2) Do you
have an example like this in your notes?
3) Can you do
some easier problems and go back to this one after?
4) What part
of the problem is giving you trouble?
5) Let's read
the problem together and make sure we understand what it is asking.
6) Can we
draw a picture of the problem? (This works well for word problems.)
7) Can we make
up an easier problem that is similar to this? Then we can work our way up to
this one.
8) What did
your teacher say about this assignment?
9) Why don't we
take a 10 minute break and come back to this when we aren't so frustrated.

Helping your child develop some self-help
strategies.
Submitted on 3/11/03 (taken from the site
www.gomath.com/exchange)
Here are some suggestions on how to help your child develop some
self-help strategies.
When your child approaches you and states that he or she is stuck...
1) ask the child to get out their notes. Have them go over the
notes they took in class and look for any examples that are similar to
the problems they are stuck on. You may have to do this with your child
for a while. If he or she does not take good, organized notes, then
start developing this in the child.
2) ask the child to read the section or section(s) of the math
textbook that deal with this concept. Insist they pay careful attention
to the examples, perhaps even working through the examples along with
the book so that they see where the numbers come from.
3) ask the child to phone a homework buddy from class. If they
don't have one, suggest they get one.
4) suggest to the child that they research the topic on the
internet OR use an online service like Gomath.com. Your child could have
sent this email in just as easily as you did. (put the ownership of
'getting it' on the child)
5) if all else fails, instruct the student to try as much of the
problem as he or she can and then skip to the next problem. Insist that
you child place a star next to the problem they struggled on. Moreover,
insist that the child ask about that particular problem or issue in
class. Follow up with your child the next day and inquire as to what the
teacher said about that problem. Ask your child what they learned when
they asked the question. Ask your child if they asked about the problem
at all!!!

Tips on preparing for a test.
Submitted on 9/24/02 (taken from the site
www.gomath.com/exchange)
Here are the top ten tips we can provide to you for better
learning. With these suggestions and some work on your part, you
should start seeing improvement in class and hopefully on the
big test too!
10) Make sure you can hear, see, and understand the teacher.
If you have problems reading the chalkboard, ask your teacher if
you can move closer. Don't be afraid to ask the teacher a
question if you don't understand something - after all, that's
why you have teachers and not just books. Try to avoid using
personal recording devices. They tend to distract other students
and can cause you to get lazy about actively listening and
taking notes.
9) Copy down everything your teacher says is important.
It would be great to write down every word your teacher said,
but that is virtually impossible. Take special care to ensure
that your notes are legible and understandable, but try to write
quickly, leaving out short, meaningless words. If your teacher
is nice enough to point out what specifically will be on the
test, use that to your advantage. Write it down. If you're not
sure, write it down.
8) Make up any work you may have missed or failed miserably.
Whether or not your teacher asks you to redo that homework
assignment you forgot about (I know - your dog ate it), there is
no substitute for actually doing the work. You certainly won't
pass the quiz on Tuesday's material if you don't understand
Monday's lecture because you were busy Friday night. Doing old
tests and homework may also serve as a good review prior to a
big test!
7) Don't cheat. At all. Ever. Under any circumstances.
Or if you do, go back and do the work yourself until you
understand it. It may look great if you get a 95% on that quiz,
but you're still going to bomb the next test. Sure it's an old
cliche, but the only person you hurt by cheating is yourself.
This all goes back to what was said in #8 anyway. Go do your
work. Yourself.
6) Create a special study area.
It's impossible to study if your brother is hanging around
throwing a tennis ball at your head, or the TV is blaring in the
background. Go find a nice, quiet area where you can study all
alone. Music won't hurt at all - but keep down the volume so you
can still concentrate. Your special study area should also be
stocked with all the essentials - paper, pencils, etc.
5) Make a routine of studying at a certain time.
Find a certain time everyday when you can study. It might only
be 30 minutes, but if you can say "I'll study everyday at 4:30,"
it'll make a huge difference. People don't like to change, but
if you can make it a habit of studying at your time in your
special study place (#6), it will be easier to sit down and
work.
4) Don't wait until the last minute.
Try studying a little bit every night until the test. If you try
to study the night before, you probably will forget everything
and be tired and unprepared. The best idea is to just review key
ideas and such the day before and morning of. Formulas,
vocabulary words, and anything else that has to memorized should
be well-known several days before the test - this will give you
confidence to do your best.
3) Find a study group.
Nothing works better than studying with a group of friends. You
can have fun, as long as the conversation doesn't stray from
school, and everyone can contribute something to help the group.
Try organizing a small number of friends (3-4), and meet a
couple times before a test. This method also helps to ensure
that you haven't misread something, lost a page of notes, or
forgotten an assignment.
2) Be prepared for the test.
Getting a good night's sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and
getting to school on time will all help to make your testing
experience, well, not so bad. If you are taking a special
standardized test like the SAT or an AP exam, make sure you have
all the registration materials and identification you will need
the night before. Take a deep breath and enjoy the test. After
all, you've studied just as well as anyone else in the room, and
you can be confident that you will pass.
1) Use www.gomath.com.
If you have a problem that is getting you stuck, send in the
problem to one of our tutors at
support@gomath.com and
we will be glad to reply with a step by step solution of the
problem. Don't hesitate to ask for a more detailed solution if
you don't understand what you get the first time.
